On Saturday, May 9, 2026, at approximately 10:48 p.m., the Alexandria Police Department responded to a local hospital in reference to a four-year-old child who had died from an apparent gunshot wound.
Through the investigation, detectives learned the incident occurred in the 3000 block of Houston Street following a birthday party. Investigators determined that two four-year-old children were playing with an illegally possessed stolen firearm while unsupervised inside the residence. During the incident, the firearm discharged, resulting in the death of one of the children.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Charges related to this incident are pending.
Chief Chad Gremillion addressed the tragedy, stating:
“A child has lost their life in a preventable tragedy. This heartbreaking incident serves as a devastating reminder of the importance of properly securing firearms and keeping them out of the reach of children. We strongly urge all gun owners to responsibly store their firearms by keeping them unloaded, locked away, and inaccessible to children at all times.”
The Alexandria Police Department has contacted and is working with the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services in connection with this case.
This is currently an ongoing investigation.
