Illegal Discharge of Firearms and Fireworks within City Limits

 

The Alexandria Police Department reminds the public that it is illegal to discharge any firearm within the city limits. Last night, illegal celebratory gunfire resulted in unnecessary injuries to victims. The illegal discharge of a firearm will result in an arrest. The discharge of fireworks within the city limits is also illegal and is easily confused with gunfire which impedes officers’
ability to effectively enforce the ordinances of illegal discharge of a firearm. Accordingly, APD will be enforcing firework ordinances that will result in the issuance of a citation.
The Alexandria Police Department would like to remind the public that it is illegal to explode a firecracker or fireworks within the city limits. In an effort to distinguish between negligent and illegal firearm discharges and illegal fireworks discharging, the Alexandria Police Department will be
Sec. 119. Fireworks, firecrackers, toy pistols; discharging within city
(a)It shall be unlawful for any person to discharge a toy pistol where percussion or powder is used, within the city.
(b)It shall be unlawful for any person to explode a firecracker or fireworks of any kind within the city; provided, however, this subsection shall not apply to pyrotechnic displays, referred to in the fire prevention code herein adopted, authorized in writing by the mayor.
