Alexandria, LA for release (4/13/25)
On Sunday, April 13, 2025, at approximately 3:00 PM, the Alexandria Police Department responded to the 2200 block of East Sycamore Street in reference to a shooting. Responding officers located 23-year-old Keely Brand, deceased from a gunshot wound.
As a point of policy and future actions of the Executive Branch working with the APD, and after hearing more from stakeholders, the City anticipates it will be drastically modifying its tactics and community services at the Authority. APD notes that over the last several years a material amount of the shootings and homicides in the City occurs in the Sycamore area of the Authority.
Accordingly, APD, the Mayor and their joint leadership team, and a whole-of-Administration approach will be scrutinizing how to disrupt the elements destroying lives and families here, as well as changing policy of the City to effect real change in how the Authority is resourced and uses resources. The City will conduct its own review of the root causes empowering or facilitating specific elements of criminal activity at or around the Authority. Again, the area at issue is measurably notable in the incidence of “homicidal intent” violent crime compared to the City at large.
Doing better is not aspirational but will be mandatory; change is required.
This is currently an ongoing investigation.
