Camera Registration

Alex-Cam Connect Program

The City of Alexandria, Alexandria Police Department, and the SafeAlex program have partnered to create a new resource for citizens and businesses to assist in crime prevention and crime solving efforts. The Alexandria Security Camera Registration (Alex-Cam Connect) program is a new public safety initiative that enables the people of Alexandria to help keep their communities safer.

Video surveillance is one of the best methods for identifying, apprehending, and convicting suspects committing crime. Many residents and business owners currently operate surveillance systems at their homes and business. If a crime occurs, nearby citizens are not always aware that their systems may have captured information that could help solve the crime. Working with the community to expand the use of existing technologies will assist in improving overall public safety in Alexandria.

This program will create a private security camera registration network that is designed to deter crime and promote public safety through the collaboration between the Alexandria Police Department and the residents and businesses in Alexandria. If a crime is committed in the view of a privately-owned security camera, Alexandria Police Officers can review the registered cameras available in the area and contact the owner with a request to view the camera footage. Having this information readily available will allow the officers to investigate crimes more efficiently and effectively. Voluntary participation in the camera registration program will greatly enhance emergency preparedness by enabling public safety professionals to better assess situations and rapidly respond.
